In his first English-language film, Brimstone, Martin Koolhoven presents a chilling Guy Pearce.
He is a vengeful preacher who travels across nineteenth-century America looking for Liz (Dakota Fanning), a young mother and midwife who can no longer speak. What precisely happened between them is part of the mystery of this surprising neo-western film, directed by Koolhoven with discipline, unsettling horror, and exploitation gusto. The result is a stylistically impressive, revisionist genre film.
