Whether he is picking up garbage in 1950s Pittsburgh, finishing another bottle on the porch, or working on a fence, Troy Maxson always has plenty to say. "You've got more stories than the Devil's got sinners," his best friend laughs.

Troy wanted to have a grand life, but is forced to settle for much less. His sports talent went nowhere. His hard work only yields basic comforts. An extramarital affair threatens to destroy his marital bliss. Sometimes you hang on his every word, but sometimes you can't stand him. That's what people are like.

Troy's story is not one that you want to miss. Denzel Washington's directorial debut – he also produced and stars in the film – has received four Oscar nominations. Unfortunately, he has far too much respect for the screenplay that August Wilson based on his 1983, Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Fences boasts superlative performances (Viola Davis!), but is impeccably shot theatre rather than cinema. A downer on an otherwise great film.
