The worst things bring out the best in Aki Kaurismäki, as evidenced by his recent Silver Bear for The Other Side of Hope.

What exactly might be found on the flipside of hope, we don't know. Kaurismäki is not out to give us false hope, not even in a crisis of asylum seekers. But what Kaurismäki can do like no other is to blend his dry wit, wonderful absurdism, and an incredible sense of cool and rock 'n' roll to inspire noblesse, solidarity, and resistance. Even – and especially – when it goes nowhere.
