What is the one thing emperors, kings, and plebs all have in common? No, I don’t mean death, I’m referring to the call of nature. A call not even our immortal fellow humans, film stars, can ignore. They are not easy to get hold of. You have to move heaven and earth to be able to scrounge a half-hour interview, and then you’re joined by half a dozen colleagues. But they all need to use the loo at some point or another. Shortly after my interview with Gael García Bernal, I was having a slash when who should come in to do the same? What to do in such a situation? Continue the interview? Ignore one another? Bernal opted for a chat. What films was I planning to see for the rest of the day? What could I recommend? El Simpatico plays the lead role in No, a surprisingly good film about the ad campaign that convinced the Chileans to vote General Pinochet out in 1988. Fifteen minutes later and Roman Polanski and I are trying to see whether two people can squeeze through the revolving door at the famous Carlton hotel together. We just fit, but his glare could have come from a general. We didn’t chat, but then, two seconds is perhaps too brief. The director of The Pianist and Chinatown is in town because of a documentary about him, the screening of his classic Tess, and as a favour to Gilles Jacob. The president of the festival has made a family film about the making of Chacun son cinéma, an omnibus film to which Polanski contributed.

--FR-- « Le roi, l’empereur, l’amiral : tous connaissent Popla ».
