1. Litanies for the lockdown

EN/ When the Brussels-based composer and world traveller Nicholas Lens found himself stranded in a paralyzed Brussels, the almost sacral silence reminded him of his visits to ancient Buddhist temples in Japan. He translated this serene atmosphere into twelve compositions, and he contacted Nick Cave, with whom he had collaborated on the opera Shell Shock in 2014, to write the desperate pleas to accompany the music. The result is L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S, an intimate album that brings the grandeur of an opera to your living room. (TZ)

2. Balkende almanak

NL/ Fans van De Sprekende Ezels, het maandelijkse free podium voor poëzie en muziek in café Monk, zullen nog even geduld moeten oefenen tot het live gebalk terugkeert. In afwachting kunnen zij troost en vermaak zoeken in de Scheurkalender 2021, waaraan artiesten als Alex Deforce, Lotte Dodion en Maarten Inghels meeschreven. Leuk extraatje: een QR-code leidt iedere maand naar een bijbehorende podcast. (GH)

3. Faim de Lous

FR/ La percée internationale de l’année 2020 est signée Lous and the Yakuza. Derrière ce pseudo, se cache non pas un syndicat du crime japonais mais la touche-à-tout bruxello-congolo-rwandaise Marie-Pierra Kakoma. Lorsque nous lui avons parlé à l’occasion de la sortie de son premier album, elle nous a révélé qu’en plus d’être chanteuse, danseuse, égérie de Louis Vuitton et porte-parole locale du mouvement Black Lives Matter, elle était avant tout une penseuse accro à la sagesse du gourou indien Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Cette dimension spirituelle est également présente dans son album Gore, où elle ne se contente pas d’être en paix avec son passé sombre, mais où elle s’adresse aussi avec force à toutes les jeunes femmes noires et à une génération éponge qui, tout comme elle, absorbe et mélange tout. Sa mosaïque de trap et de R&B contemporain a conquis son producteur espagnol, les enfants de Madonna et Jimmy Fallon.

Avec des chansons pop accrocheuses, inspirées par la musique classique, que son père lui faisait écouter dès son plus âge, et par la scène urbaine, à laquelle elle s’est raccrochée quand elle était dans le caniveau, elle insuffle de l’énergie pour toutes les saisons. (TP)

4. Zwangere Guy en XXL

FR/ Jouer devant un public restreint, ce n’est pas du goût du Moïse du rap bruxellois. Zwangere Guy n’est donc pas du tout monté sur scène cette année. Pour compenser, il a composé beaucoup de musique. Il a mis en boîte quarante chansons, dont huit se sont retrouvées sur BrutXXL, la version extra-large de Brutaal, le magnifique album qu’il avait sorti l’année passée. (TZ)

5. Toogverhaal

NL/ Ga er maar aan staan: net in het jaar dat de togen onbemand blijven, het epicentrum van je debuutroman modelleren naar die intens gemiste kroegen waarin verlangen wordt verdronken en de wereld vervloekt. Het papieren Café De Kauw van Frederik Willem Daem plakt, geurt, roest en roezemoest zo levensecht dat je de lambrisering in je rug voelt prikken, de vergeelde herinneringen aan de muur als de jouwe gaat beschouwen en de smaak van oud bier met geen Fristi krijgt weggespoeld. Een literaire oplawaai uit de schemerzone tussen pot en pint. (KS)

6. Knuffelzak

NL/ Kutjaar. Geen concert met friends en een pintje achteraf. Geen afscheidsknuffel vooraleer iedereen zijn eigen weg gaat en verdwijnt in de nacht. Ook heimwee naar de tijd voor corona, toen vrienden nog vrienden waren en geen knuffelcontact? Omdat het nog even niet mag en we er allemaal nood aan hebben: een knuffelzak voor je vrienden van het onafscheidelijke duo Hylke en Ilse achter het merk Bonnie & Bonnie. 7. Désimposées

FR/ Les voix francophones et néerlandophones de l’Afroféminisme en Belgique s’unissent dans un des livres les plus inspirants de l’année 2020. Being (Imposed Upon) s’impose comme la nouvelle bible décoloniale en territoire bruxellois et au-delà. Seize femmes noires – poétesses, artistes, militantes, galeristes, essayistes – prennent la plume pour mettre noir sur blanc les formes d’imposition qu’elles ont subies et continuent de subir. Mais aussi les stratégies et combats mis en place pour s’en affranchir.

La journaliste Djia Mambu y parle de la représentation des femmes noires dans les médias et au cinéma. La conservatrice et restauratrice Emmanuelle Nsunda revient sur son parcours depuis l’enfance: entre séquelles d’une « intégration parfaite », assignations et histoire du soin du cheveu crépu.

La galeriste Anne Wetsi Mpoma déjoue les mécanismes de dévalorisation de l’art afro-belge là où Gia Abrassart, porteuse du projet Café Congo, liste les tiers-lieux permettant à la culture afrodescendante de s’exprimer sans se dénaturer. « Nous gagnons des batailles et cet ouvrage en est une », préface la poétesse Joëlle Sambi Nzeba. 8. Koesterboek

NL/ “Gelukkig nieuwjaar sukkels!” sputtert een videoband aan het einde van Ik kom van ver, maar blijf niet lang. Wat daaraan voorafgaat, is een uit de nostalgische gloed van het jaar 1997 gepulkte roes, die prachtig twijfelt tussen rondhangen en verdwijnen, verstillen en uitbreken. De nieuwe Ward Zwart en Enzo Smits is om hard te koesteren. (KS)

9. Camp site poetry

EN/ For seven years, the Brussels photographer Katherine Longly made regular visits to the chalet of Blieke and Nicole, on a campsite thirty kilometres north of the capital, where they chatted in juicy Brussels dialect, hosted the craziest parties, filled ashtrays to overflowing, and continuously refilled the glasses. In Hernie & Plume, Longly shows how Brussels’s Clint Eastwood and one of the city’s first female tram drivers dance and jest around their big round table, but also love and comfort one another, and deal with ageing and loss. Our new favourite Christmas story is a fine piece of poésie brute, built of breakable junk, yellowing anecdotes, and pure love. (KS)

10. Boogie Nights à Bruxelles

FR/ Jimmy Pantera, connaisseur culte, a passé deux ans à travailler sur le projet de ses rêves : un livre sur l’histoire du Cinéma ABC, le célèbre temple du porno à Rogier, qui, de 1972 à 2013, combinait des projections de films avec du strip-tease en direct. 304 pages de sous-culture avec des analyses, des témoignages du personnel et des visiteurs, plein de photos vintage et des publicités peintes à la main. Un incontournable pour tous ceux qui ont un faible pour les récits de vie mélancoliques et l’histoire passionnante du cinéma en marge. (GH)

11. Souvenirs des jours heureux

FR/ Dans le noir et blanc granuleux des livres de Christopher de Béthune se lisent des histoires d’amour, de montagnes, d’océans et de cosmos. Après Outland et Orion, le photographe bruxellois adresse un poème à celle qu’il a aimée pour lui dire au revoir, sans larmes. « Ça n’est pas un adieu. » Dans Invisible Waves, de Béthune capte avec une douceur nostalgique le moment de grâce et de plénitude d’une relation amoureuse. Ce laps de temps magique où deux êtres se retrouvent seuls au monde, enivrés par la légèreté que leur procurent leurs sentiments.

Invisible Waves n’est pas un livre triste mais la collection de souvenirs heureux immortalisés avant qu’ils ne soient emportés par le souffle du vent ou par la force d’une vague. Sorti chez l’éditeur allemand Dienacht, l’objet, dont on salue la qualité du papier et des impressions, laisse à la nature – les dunes, les marées, les feuilles mortes et les colombes – le soin de parler de l’amour. 12. Dress up like Stromae

EN/ After a year indoors, your wardrobe probably looks drab and worn out. Treat yourself or someone else to an article of clothing from the new, sixth capsule from Mosaert, Stromae’s creative label. 13. Walk a mile in her heels

EN/ Spending the jolly season at home does also open new perspectives. Why not play an old-fashioned board game, for example? If you play Art & My Career, you will also get a work of art and a major awareness update. Visual artist Olivia Hernaïz developed the game while studying at Goldsmiths in London after she got about one hundred reactions to an anonymous and confidential survey that she had sent to women who work in the art scenes in France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.

The sometimes very raw and disturbing answers to questions about financial stability, competition and solidarity, sexism and sexual harassment, relationships, opportunities, motherhood, and so on resulted in seven female characters – an art historian, a gallerist, a professor, an art educator, a museum director, a curator, and an artist – who each try to make it in the art world by collecting money, happiness, and/or fame. Art & My Career offers you a chance to walk a mile in the shoes of a female art worker and then – as a resolution for 2021 – to stamp your heels down hard on the toes of the still dominant patriarchy. 14. Schroot staat scherp

NL/ Met rotzooi die anderen naar het recyclagepark voeren muzikaal indruk maken: dat doet Schroothoop op zijn debuut-ep Klein gevaarlijk afval. Saxofonist Rik Staelens timmerde samen met Margo Maex en Timo Vantyghem, collega’s bij stadsfanfare La Clinik du Dr. Poembak, een bastaardorkest bijeen dat en stoemelings de hoofdstedelijke smeltkroes bij het nekvel pakt. 15. A candid view of love

EN/ Along with Chibi Ichigo and IKRAAAN, Charlotte Meyntjens aka MEYY manifested herself in the vanguard of the new generation of unconventional female artists who articulate nostalgia for the big city in dreamlike R&B, jazzy electronica, and muted hip hop. On her debut EP Spectrum, the very young singer showed a fragile but also seductive side of herself with her candid view of love.

16. Let there be light

EN/ Just before the lockdown, Tessa Dixson birthed her debut, appropriately named Genesis. The 22-year-old Brussels-based singer with British roots had already been noted for her vocal contributions for Warhola and Roméo Elvis and her EP Abyss. But her catchy songs that flirt between pop and R&B and her sultry voice are far from abysmal. Has Brussels’s Dua Lipa arrived?

17. Paint it B

EN/ With “Escalate” and “Rattlesnake”, the Antwerpian R&B innovator Justine Bourgeus aka Tsar B gave pole dancers around the world new life. In the meantime, the B doesn’t only stand for her surname, but also for Brussels, where the tsarina came up with the immersive sounds for her new EP Unpaintable in her bedroom. Among others, the record features collaborations with other bel-pop royalty like Mauro. (TZ)

18. A work of art

EN/ The past year has clearly been very difficult for a lot of people. Fortunately, however, there was also no shortage of heart-warming moments, such as the launch of Art Cares Covid (now on show at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts), which built a bridge of solidarity between visual artists and the elderly. For each artwork you buy, 60% goes to the artist and 40% to the non-profit organization À Travers les Arts! (KS)

19. Sock it and see

EN/ Another way to support a good cause and bring art home is Socksial Club. This group of sock-lovers commissions a different artist to design a new pair every month – in December it is Instagram hero Jean Jullien, in January the chanteuse Pomme – and, in cooperation with BxlRefugees, offers a meal to a refugee per pair sold and an additional underwear kit per annual subscription. 20. Food for thought

EN/ The corona crisis has made it very clear that what preceded these times was not always the best of all possible worlds either. So we can only hope that the civilian initiative Feed the Culture, a food bank for the cultural sector that provides families with urgently needed essentials at the See U-site every Saturday, will inspire politicians to act. You don’t have to wait for that before you support them, however. (KS)
