The Beursschouwburg is starting the new year with a themed programme on solitude and loneliness. Until April, the performing arts, films, concerts, debates, and exhibitions will all be about people who go it alone.

The programme's general title is O Solitude, which was borrowed from an ode to independent individuals who have the freedom to determine their own destiny written by the English baroque composer Henry Purcell.

O Solitude is starting with an opening weekend on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 February. Among other things, the programme features the opening of the exhibition The Understanding of Nonsense by Dutch artist Feiko Beckers. He has filled the exhibition space with three pile dwellings in which visitors can behold his little puzzles in relative isolation. Another highlight is the Belgian première of the solo Mercurial George by Canadian choreographer Dana Michel – who explores her own particularity as a Canadian-Caribbean dance curiosity.

The Black Box video programme is starting with the video Dag'aa by the Palestinian Shadi Habib Allah, who spent time with isolated Bedouin communities in the Sinai Desert.

On Saturday, the kids can be dropped off with Feiko Beckers for a crash course in hut building during the "Ketjes Party". In the evening, adults can indulge their self-love during a cosy Onesie Night, spent in the one-piece pyjamas of the same name.

Over the following weeks there will also be a theatre installation, Zvizdal, by the Berlin theatre company about an almost entirely abandoned village in Ukraine, and the première of the performance Omertà, in which Bernard Van Eeghem and Stefanie Claes take an oath of secrecy. The height of loneliness will probably be achieved during the "Dinner for One" and the "Only the Lonely" karaoke on 25 February.
