Alice Neel never abandoned figuration when abstraction reigned supreme. Today, the American visual artist, who died 34 years ago, is recognised as one of the greatest portraitists of the twentieth century.

She got intellectuals, as well as the neighbours and the shopkeeper on the corner, to pose in her apartment in New York.

This exhibition shows, for the first time, vibrant canvases that were painted outside at Spring Lake or in Vermont.

The landscapes, interiors, and family portraits reveal all the joy that the artist found in the simple pleasures of life in the country, far from the day-to-day stress of New York.
