We had to wait a long time for it, but at last we can again lose ourselves in action-packed blockbusters or dream away with intimate visual stories in front of that magical silver screen. Ten reasons, in three languages, to leave the sunscreen alone and surrender to the magic of the big screen.

1. The Suicide Squad

US, dir.: James Gunn, act.: Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Sylvester Stallone
Release: 28/7

What will this summer's blockbuster be? Among the heavyweights, this summer's battle is between Marvel's Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh as deadly spies, the burnt rubber and Vin Diesel-scented Fast & Furious 9 and The Suicide Squad. In the latter, a hodgepodge of enemies of Batman and Superman are dropped on a South American island with a Nazi prison that does not shy away from dirty experiments.
Fun with Gunn. The first Suicide Squad did not take off but the sequel could be a lot more fun. This time it was up to James Gunn to direct Margot Robbie as psychopath Harley Quinn and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark. With Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn proved that his first goal is to entertain the audience.

2. The man who sold his skin

FR, TN, dir.: Kaouther Ben Hania, act.: Yahya Mahayni, Koen De Bouw, Monica Bellucci
Release: 4/8

Tattoo & taboe.

3. Falling

US, dir.: Viggo Mortensen, act.: Viggo Mortensen, Lance Henriksen
Release: 14/7

4. Rifkin’s Festival

US, ES, dir.: Woody Allen, act.: Wallace Shawn, Gina Gershon, Louis Garrel
Release: 4/8

Flirting at film festivals. The wife of a neurotic American writer takes him to the San Sebastián Film Festival. While she flirts with a young director, he has time to whine about ailments, woo a pretty doctor and incorporate scenes from the films of Bergman, Buñuel and Orson Welles into his dreams.
For or against? What if we divided the good and bad news between the camp that dislikes Woody Allen and the camp that loves him? Despite all the opposition and his advanced age, the director of Annie Hall, Match Point or Midnight in Paris continues to film scripts from his own pen. But Rifkin’s Festival also carries an imprint of his best work.

5. In the mood for love

HK, dir.: Wong Kar-Wai, act.: Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung
Release: 21/7

7. First Cow

US, dir.: Kelly Reichardt, act: John Magaro, Orion Lee
Release: 28/7

A butter-smooth western. First Cow takes you back to the Oregon of 200 years ago. The time of the pioneers and the emergence of the settlements that make the Wild West a myth. Two gentle fortune hunters join forces and create a furore with pastries. Their secret ingredient is milk which they steal from the first and only cow in the region.
Quickly, to Kelly. Kelly Reichardt directed this equally intimate and pared-down western with patties instead of gunslingers and muddy woods instead of vast prairies and it turn outs that is all there is to it. The director of Wendy and Lucy and Meek’s Cutoff guards the fort for American auteur cinema.

8. Titane

FR, dir.: Julia Ducournau, act.: Vincent Lindon, Agathe Rousselle, Garance Marillier
Release: 28/7

Graaf, graver, graafst.

9. Onoda

FR, dir.: Arthur Harari, act.: Kanji Tsuda, Testsuya Chiba
Release: 11/8

10. The Green Knight

US, dir.: David Lowery, act.: Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton
Release: 4/8

By fire and sword. The ultimate of knight novels? That must be Sir Gawayne and the Grene Knyght, written down in Middle English verse 740 years ago. During a quest, Lord Gawain, nephew of King Arthur, is tried by a giant green knight who is suspiciously quick to behead him. Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire and The Personal History of David Copperfield is starring in the film adaptation.
Finally a good knight movie? American director David Lowery felt like returning to the simplicity of his magnificent haunted film A Ghost Story after seeing off Robert Redford in The Old Man & the Gun. The plan to keep it to an indie film with one knight on one horse fell through grandly. It has become more epic and eccentric.
