Gone is our nostalgia for the time when every single animated film by Pixar was an absolute gem. They are still the best show in town. Coco is better than Cars 3, Finding Dory, and The Good Dinosaur, but it doesn’t match the greats like Inside Out or Wall-E.

The enormous importance of music and songs is new, as is their passionate love affair with non-American culture. Coco is loco about Mexico. The 12-year-old Miguel wants to be a musician, but music is a taboo in his family since a distant ancestor and her daughter were abandoned by a musician. On Día de Muertos, the exuberant festival during which Mexicans commemorate their dead, the boy is transported to the land of the dead.

Don’t worry about nightmares. Director Lee Unkrich (Finding Nemo, Toy Story 3) depicts this world in incredible detail, with tons of colour and joy. Skeletons and dead uncles have never looked so warm and sweet. The story heavily underscores the importance of family and commemorating lost loved ones. Perhaps this is one that you should take both your kids and their grandparents to see. By the end, there will not be a dry eye in the house.
