Arnaud Desplechin excels at fast-pace, dialogue-driven films. Les fantômes d’Ismaël, the opening film of the 70th Cannes Film Festival, again features lots of talking without ever being boring or tedious.

Mathieu Amalric plays a film director who spent years trying to deal with the sudden disappearance of his wife. The womaniser seems finally to have found rest with an astronomer (Gainsbourg), but just before he starts shooting his new film, his old love (Cotillard), who was presumed dead, suddenly reappears.

By mixing perspectives and levels of reality, Desplechin makes this film haunting. The drama packs an impressive punch. It is a tangle, but an intriguing one.
