Love & Friendship is most definitely not a remedy for the poor performance of the Red Devils, grouchy bosses, and thunderstorms on summer days. But you will certainly be cheered up by this adaptation of a Jane Austen story by Whit Stillman, an American director who only makes a film every few years.

A delectable Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan. Having no husband and no income might be a serious problem in 19th century England, but Susan sees an opportunity to work her way up by flirting and manipulating people shamelessly. With her overwhelming charm and quick wit, she effortlessly exploits the stupidity, naivety, and hypocrisy of the people around her. It is cruel, and yet you can’t help but cheer for the lady. The sets, costumes, and landscapes are of superior period drama quality. The atmosphere and tone are not – they are as modern and fresh as a spring leaf. Few recent romantic comedies have been so sparkling and funny.
