Are we witnessing a mild sort of growing pain? Rebecca Zlotowski's first two films, Belle épine and Grand Central, were so good that she was immediately ranked among the best.

At the beginning, you think that Planetarium is another leap forward. She immerses you in an unapologetically enchanting evocation of Paris and France in the late 1930s. Not everyone could do that. The graceful Natalie Portman and Lily-Rose Depp play two American sisters and spiritualists who team up with a French pioneer in a veritable industry of illusion: film.

They become so obsessed by their collaboration and the unprecedented possibilities of the medium that they lose sight of reality, which is getting darker by the day. There is great dramatic potential here, but Zlotowski and her screenwriter don't seem to have realised that and they dilute the drama with irrelevant themes and subplots. This fine, strange film would have been more powerful with a little less poetry and a little more focus.
