Song to Song is better than the substandard Knight of Cups, but not nearly as good as either Badlands and The Tree of Life, the films which made Terrence Malick a celebrated director.

The mixed up chronology cannot mask the fact that the plot is very thin. Rooney Mara plays a young musician who has two men on the go at the same time. The nice one is a musician (Ryan Gosling), while the nasty one is a wily, wealthy music producer (Michael Fassbender) who thinks that everything is for sale. She gradually comes to her senses. It has become more difficult to be swept away by Malick’s proud, authentic lyricism, but it is still a joy whenever it does happen.
