There is an island in the San Francisco Bay called Alcatraz. It lent its name to what was once the most famous penitentiary in the world, before the foundation of Guantanamo. Between 1934 and 1963, Alcatraz was home to a maximum-security prison from which few people, if any, ever escaped. Forty years after it closed, a kind of mini-Alcatraz opened in Brussels. Not in the bay, but alongside the Brussels canal, at Koolmijnenkaai 36 quai des Charbonnages in Molenbeek. It is actually a cocktail and tapas bar, which comes in handy for people who want to move straight to jail without endangering any lives by driving under the influence. The way the owners of this establishment have turned it into a convincing looking prison is indicative of both motivation and faith in the concept. Voluntary visitors first walk down a narrow corridor with displays about the history of Alcatraz before passing an electric chair. You can then choose a cosy seat between the barbed wire, bars, and portraits of Al Capone and co. Opposite the bar “death row” begins, with two rows of cells inside which visitors can take a table. The bartender/guard is dressed in orange overalls to serve you. Fortunately, there is no prison food on the menu, but rather tapas (which are called “tapraz” here), cocktails (all with legally themed names), salads, sandwiches, ice cream, milk shakes (some with alcohol), beer, wine, and liquors. There is also a role of toilet paper in each of the cells because prisoners obviously do not get napkins. There is quite a lot of light, so the atmosphere is not oppressive, and yet you still have this sneaking feeling, well, of being imprisoned. It will be interesting to see whether the criminal underworld of Brussels finds its way there.
