Le Cercle des Voyageurs

Thinking of going somewhere? Perhaps you should prepare your trip at Le Cercle des Voyageurs. Le Cercle has been around for a while, but it was revamped a few years ago. It’s a travel-themed establishment for people looking for that little something extra, and it’s a great place to spend time. There is a risk that on your visit to the café-restaurant, you will just want to stay and call it home because it is really very inviting. One whole wall is decorated with leather suitcases that are at least a hundred years old, each with their own history and story, which are really worth spending some time investigating. There are antique luggage racks with coat hooks recycled from old trains. The ceiling is decorated with a plaster mould in the shape of an enormous circle with old world maps painted on it, complete with allegorical depictions of the cardinal directions, and a monkey grabbing a coconut out of a plaster palm tree. There are comfortable leather armchairs both at the front of the café near the window and in the space at the back under the skylight. On the whole, the café exudes a neo-colonial atmosphere that you needn’t feel guilty about. The open kitchen serves food at lunchtime, in the evening, and during the weekend. The menu also looks like a world map (and features children’s and vegetarian options). In between, you can order cake or ice cream, or drink a selection of Belgian beers, (world) wines, exotic cocktails, and tea or coffee from different parts of the world. So close to Manneken Pis, the prices slightly exceed the budget of your average weary traveller, but the menus are reasonably priced, and some thought clearly went into the fine presentation. Those interested can also retreat to the beautiful library-cum-exhibition space, which is filled with travel books. La Cave, on the other hand, regularly organises parties and concerts.

NL ❙ Reisplannen? Misschien is het een idee om die concreet te maken of voor te bereiden in Le Cercle des Voyageurs. Le Cercle bestaat al een tijdje, maar kreeg een paar jaar geleden een nieuwe impuls. Het is een plek die in het teken staat van reizen voor meerwaardezoekers, én een plek waar het fijn toeven is. Het risico bestaat zelfs dat je bij een bezoek aan het café-restaurant besluit om maar gewoon thuis te blijven, want het decor is bijzonder uitnodigend. De hele zijwand is bekleed met minstens honderd oude lederen reiskoffers, allemaal stukken met een eigen verleden en een eigen verhaal, waar je een tijdje naar kunt kijken. Onder die reiskoffers hangen antieke bagagerekken met kapstokken uit oude treinstellen. Het plafond is versierd met gipsen moulures in de vorm van een grote cirkel waarin oude wereldkaarten getekend zijn, compleet met allegorische afbeeldingen van de windstreken, en een aapje dat een kokosnoot scoort uit een gipsen palmboom. Vooraan aan het raam, en ook in het compartiment met lichtkoepel achteraan, staan comfortabele lederen zetels. Het geheel ademt een neokoloniaal sfeertje waar je je niet schuldig bij hoeft te voelen. De open keuken serveert ’s middags, ’s avonds en in het weekend zelfs doorlopend lekkers. De menukaart lijkt ook een beetje een wereldkaart, inclusief gerechten voor kinderen en vegetariërs. Tussendoor is er taart of ijs, of drink je Belgische bieren, (wereld)wijnen, exotische cocktails, en thee of koffie uit verschillende werelddelen. De prijzen liggen zo vlak bij Manneken Pis iets boven het budget van de berooide reiziger, maar de menu’s zijn dan weer voordelig en van de presentatie wordt werk gemaakt. Wie wil, kan zich afzonderen in de mooie bibliotheek annex exporuimte vol reisboeken, en in La Cave worden geregeld feestjes en concerten georganiseerd.

FR ❙ Des projets de voyage ? C’est peut-être une bonne idée de les concrétiser au Cercle des Voyageurs. Le Cercle existe déjà depuis un petit moment mais il est porté par une nouvel élan depuis quelques années. C’est un café-restaurant placé sous le signe des voyages avec une valeur ajoutée mais aussi un endroit où il fait bon s’installer. Le décor est très engageant. Tout le mur latéral est recouvert d’une centaine de vieilles valises en cuir, chacune avec son passé et son histoire. On peut déjà passer beaucoup de temps à les regarder. En-dessous se trouvent d’antiques rayonnages à bagages, avec des porte-manteaux de vieilles rames de train. Le plafond est décoré avec des moulures en forme de grands cercles où sont représentées d’anciennes cartes du monde, avec les figures allégoriques des points cardinaux et un petit singe qui cueille une noix de coco dans un palmier de plâtre. À l’avant, côté fenêtre mais aussi dans le compartiment avec le dôme vitré à l’arrière se trouvent de confortables fauteuils en cuir. L’ensemble dégage une atmosphère néo-coloniale sans le sentiment de culpabilité. La cuisine ouverte fonctionne midi et soir, et même en continu le week-end. La carte a elle aussi un petit air mondial et comprend également des plats pour les enfants et les végétariens. Entre les repas, on peut prendre de la tarte, une glace, des bières belges, du vin, des cocktails exotiques et du thé ou du café des quatre coins du monde. Si près du Manneken-Pis, les prix sont un peu au-dessus du budget du routard fauché, mais les menus sont avantageux et la présentation est soignée. On peut aussi s’isoler dans la belle bibliothèque-espace d’expo pleine de livres de voyages et des fêtes et des concerts sont régulièrement organisés dans La Cave.
