Le Saint Charles

It’s nice to see that the authentic café Le Saint Charles continues to thrive. Le Saint Charles has always been here (though judging by an old photograph it used to be called À la Boule du Karreveld), and it continues to boast an exuberant in-crowd atmosphere. The orders come thick and fast, and there is always someone coming in or out. The interior is also still intact. Apparently someone thought it necessary to smash the front windowpane, but otherwise the beautiful panelling, antique bar, and billiard table in the centre of the room are all still here. There is a separate smokers’ room and at the front there is an inviting little wooden terrasse. The TV is on, but it’s muted, and the gaming machines don’t really cause much disturbance either. We were particularly drawn to the very fine old advertisements for the Rodenbach and Cantillon beers either side of the square bar. We also noted that the selection of special beers has increased spectacularly since the last time we were here. The neighbours at Brasserie de la Senne now also tout their excellent wares in this institution. The tricolour flag on the wall announces that these are Belgians and proud of the fact. And you can even hear the odd word of authentic Brussels dialect here. Beside posters of the boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa in 1974, of Eddy Merckx versus a steep mountain climb in France in the 1970s, and of RWD Molenbeek versus Beveren-Waas on 7 January 1979, there is also a signed poster of our very own Brussels Red Devil Adnan Januzaj, who grew up not far from here. The Anderlecht coach Besnik Hasi also happens to be a friend of the owner. Sitting in this café, you can’t help but love Molenbeek. So stop in every once in a while.

NL ❙ Fijn om vast te stellen dat het authentieke café Le Saint Charles nog steeds goed draait. Le Saint Charles is er altijd al geweest (afgaande op een oude foto heette het vroeger À la Boule du Karreveld) en vandaag heerst er nog een uitgelaten ons-kent-onssfeer. De bestellingen lopen vlot en om de haverklap loopt er iemand binnen en buiten. Ook het interieur is intact. Blijkbaar heeft iemand het nodig gevonden om het glas van de vitrine te breken, maar de mooie lambrisering, het antieke toogmeubel, de centrale biljarttafel: ze zijn er nog allemaal. Er is een apart rokerslokaal en voor de deur prijkt een sympathiek klein houten terras. De tv staat aan zonder geluid en de speelkasten storen eigenlijk ook niet echt. Zeer mooi zijn de grote oude reclames voor de bieren van Rodenbach en Cantillon aan beide zijden van de vierkante gelagzaal. Wat opvalt is dat het aanbod speciaalbieren spectaculair is gestegen sinds de laatste keren dat we hier kwamen. Ook de buren van Brasserie de la Senne slijten in dit instituut nu hun uitstekende waren. Aan de muur meldt een driekleur dat men hier Belg is en er fier op is om dat te zijn. Je kunt hier ook nog een woordje Brussels horen. Naast affiches van de bokswedstrijd van Muhammad Ali versus George Foreman in Kinshasa in 1974, van Eddy Merckx versus een Franse berghelling in de jaren 1970, van RWD Molenbeek versus Beveren-Waas op 7 januari 1979, hangt er ook een gehandtekende poster van onze Brusselse Rode Duivel Adnan Januzaj, die niet ver hiervandaan opgroeide. Ook Anderlecht-trainer Besnik Hasi is een vriend van de patron. Wie in dit café zit, kan niet anders dan van Molenbeek houden. Hou er dus af en toe eens even halt.

FR ❙ Ça fait plaisir de constater que les affaires vont toujours bien pour le café authentique Le Saint Charles. Il a toujours existé (d’après une photo ancienne, il s’appelait avant À la Boule du Karreveld) et aujourd’hui, il y règne encore une atmosphère décontractée où tout le monde semble se connaître. Les commandes ne se font pas attendre et le va-et-vient est incessant. L’intérieur est lui aussi resté intact. Il semble que quelqu’un a jugé utile de briser la vitre à l’avant, mais les beaux lambris, l’antique comptoir et la table de billard centrale sont toujours là. Il y a une pièce séparée pour les fumeurs et devant la porte se trouve une sympathique petite terrasse en bois. La télé est allumée sans le son et les bornes d’arcade ne dérangent pas vraiment non plus. Il y a de très belles vieilles pubs grand format pour les bières Rodenbach et Cantillon des deux côtés de la salle de consommation carrée. Ce que l’on remarque, c’est que l’offre en bières spéciales a augmenté de manière spectaculaire depuis notre dernier passage. Les voisins de la Brasserie de la Senne écoulent à présent eux aussi leurs excellents produits dans cette institution. Au mur, un drapeau tricolore signale qu’on est ici belge et fier de l’être. On peut aussi y entendre encore parler un peu le dialecte bruxellois. À côté d’affiches du combat de boxe opposant Muhammad Ali à George Foreman en 1974 au Zaïre, d’Eddy Merckx opposé à une côte de montagne en France dans les années 70, du RWD Molenbeek opposé à Beveren-Waas le 7 janvier 1979, on trouve également un poster dédicacé de notre Diable Rouge bruxellois Adnan Januzaj, qui a grandi pas loin d’ici. L’entraîneur d’Anderlecht Besnik Hasi est aussi un ami du patron. Celui qui prend place dans ce café ne peut faire autrement qu’aimer Molenbeek. Arrêtez-y vous donc de temps en temps.
