Success can sometimes be a curse, and you don’t need to be Marilyn Monroe to suffer its consequences. Take the example of Pepete & Ronron, a wine bar that flourished during the summer months. Like Norma Jean Baker, it boasts an iconic look. With its neo-tapas bar style, the place attracts attention. Inside, there are ruby red Tolix stools, pretty pale wooden shelves, designer light fittings hanging from the ceiling, a fine product selection, period-look tiles…you get the picture. In addition to this iconic look, they have absorbed the spirit of the times so well that they have recreated it in a very flattering incarnation. Hence, the natural wine list, which includes the series of wines by the late Christian Chaussard as well as co-operative wines such as Estézargues and Foulards Rouges by Jean-François Nicq (€5.50 a glass): proof of a judicious selection that reminds us that wine, first and foremost, comes from grapes. The same goes for the food menu, which although mainly nibbles, is not to be sniffed at. This was proved to us by a series of delightful dishes picked from the Iberian culinary repertoire: gazpacho (€3.50) full of flavour, anchoas en aceite de oliva (anchovies in olive oil, €4) from a top-of-the-range can, deliciously moist tortilla (€4), gourmet pan con tomate (bread with tomatoes, €4), and gourmet jamón (€6). So, wherein lies the curse? In that the place is heaving. A strange curse, you might think, but not if you knew that Pepete & Ronron operates around a circle of lucky initiates who know the boss. As for the other customers, too bad – they’ll be left hanging around at the entrance without anyone paying them the least bit of notice. And if by some miracle they manage to get a table, they’ll have to battle to order so much as an olive. Not to mention the fact that everything will be served to them offhand, with a side dish of contempt. Shame.

Jammer.
