In the 1970s, Portuguese author António Lobo Antunes worked as a doctor during the colonial war in Angola.

During this period, he wrote moving love letters to his heavily pregnant wife. These letters inspired director Ivo Ferreira to create an artistic marriage between film and literature. The use of voice-over is sometimes rather heavy-handed, but the mixture of declarations of love, melancholy observations, and bitter indictments of war is devastatingly beautiful to watch.
