In Les gardiennes, Xavier Beauvois (Des hommes et des dieux) shows us the ups and downs of life on a French farm to the rhythm of the seasons.
While the men get shot to pieces in the Great War, the women bend over backwards to keep the farm running, and even to modernize it. You occasionally imagine watching a pastoral fable, but Beauvois isn’t only interested in the beautiful landscapes. Life’s tragedies are taken seriously, and are not sensationalized any more than necessary. Things are bad enough as they are.
