With a less talented actress than Charlotte Rampling, Hannah would probably not have been a very good film. Rampling plays an ageing housewife who is suddenly left all by herself. Her husband is put in gaol and her son shows her the door.

The pain that this causes is revealed subtly but effectively in eyes that search for the light, a body that yearns to be embraced, or the slightest changes in the curve of the mouth. The bitter Hannah is Rampling’s triumph.
