In the port town of Solby, the unadventurous elephant Sebastian and a fearless cat called Mitcho find a message in a bottle from the missing mayor. An enclosed seed grows into a giant pear overnight. This is the beginning of a wacky adventure with a construction-crazed interim mayor, a terrifying sea dragon, (not so) terrifying pirates, and a mysterious island.

Does this ring a bell? The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear by the Danish illustrator and satirist Jakob Martin Strid is popular among parents who read to their children at bedtime but who can’t stand the sterile tedium of most stories that put them to sleep too. The Giant Pear stimulates your imagination and preaches a merry anarchy.

Three Danish animators joined forces to make this film adaptation that honours the humour, poetry, and spirit of the book. At a cursory glance, they have succeeded in their mission, though the animation does lack a touch of magic. But of course your toddlers will have the last word.
