20th Century Fox is apparently the first big Hollywood studio to invest in a romantic teen movie in which the main character is a homosexual. Even though the competition is doing worse, you can’t expect praise if you are more than a decade late.

Love, Simon tries worryingly hard to be as middle-of-the-road as possible and doesn’t dare to distinguish itself from any other commercial high school film in any respect. It is a remarkable goal: surely you should want to stand out from the crowd. Protagonist Simon certainly does not want to. “I’m just like you,” is his depressingly unambitious and conformist message. The mild-mannered boy next door has the odds stacked against him. Almost everyone he knows is as sweet as a Disney princess, empathetic, and exemplary. He prefers to postpone his coming out a little longer and doesn’t go any further than an online flirtation. But he would like to know the identity of the anonymous boy with whom he has shared his secret. This sunny, soft, saccharine teen flick consciously avoids any drama and is primarily geared to young audiences. But we guess these are choices you have to respect.
