“This device cures heartache”, Keire has chalked on his skateboard. The young man is growing up in the desolate town of Rockford in the American Rust Belt. For him and his buddy Zack, skateboarding is an outlet, an identity, something to hold on to that neither of them have at home.
The directorial debut of Bing Liu, who is himself a skater, follows his friends as they struggle to mature into adulthood. At the same time, the documentary sketches a disturbing portrait of class, race, and masculinity in 21st-century America.
