Preparing an invasion, three extra-terrestrial scouts occupy the bodies of three Japanese people in the hope of understanding human concepts like love, labour, and culture.

The Japanese Before We Vanish is a remarkable, super eclectic hybrid of horror, scifi, and nonsense, but its coherence starts falling apart as it goes along, not every tonal change is plausible, and the film can sometimes drag a little. But you can’t doubt its originality, even if you notice the nods to the relatively little-known Starman by John Carpenter.
