Two Oscar nominations might make you think that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (Das Leben der Anderen, The Tourist) is back in top form, but you’d be wrong.

Werk ohne Autor is a three-hour homeland-inspired film about an artist based on Gerhard Richter. Thirty years of history passes in the background, from Nazism to communism and the escape to the West. The ideas about art and the link with personal suffering are superficial, the music dictates your feelings, and visually, this is not great cinema.
