On the recently released When the Birds Leave, the Turnhout-born, New York-based Robin Verheyen has joined forces with three heavyweights from the local scene.

Jazz bird finds a warm nest
The saxophonist composed his pieces partly in function of his companions: the pianist Marc Copland, with whom he has collaborated for years, drummer Billy Hart, who played with Stan Getz and Miles Davis, and contrabassist Drew Gress.
After a series of more eclectic musical peregrinations, Verheyen has returned to the classical jazz nest. There is only one conclusion: at 34, Verheyen, who continues to combine virtuosity and idiosyncrasy, has definitively outgrown the label “prodigy of Belgian jazz”, warmly and passionately creating music with musicians who are twice as old.
