Ricki and the Flash

“I’m a sucker for the underdog,” so says director Jonathan Demme. In Ricki and the Flash, the eternal loser is a failed rock singer, or otherwise a phenomenal Meryl Streep.

Jonathan Demme will always be remembered for The Silence of the Lambs, but he also made music videos for Bruce Springsteen and New Order, three films about Neil Young, and Stop Making Sense, a concert film about Talking Heads. In the musical dramedy Ricki and the Flash he further examines the lives, music, and ambitions of “ordinary” people in a very classical way, but with a lot of humour and warm empathy. This time, he does so with sexagenarian Ricki Rendazzo (Meryl Streep) and her family, three children and a husband (Kevin Kline), who she abandoned when she was young to go and make it big as a rock star in LA. But she never made it further than being a penniless check-out lady and the lead singer of a cover band that performs in a perennially half-empty bar. The news that her daughter (Mamie Gummer, Streep’s actual daughter) needs her because she has been dumped by her husband sounds ominous to Ricki because she knows that a reunion with her family could easily go terribly wrong.

While La Streep sang “The Winner Takes it All” in Mamma Mia!, in Ricki and the Flash she plays a kind of loser, though she puts her heart and soul into covers of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and even Lady Gaga and P!nk. Part of the fun of her character lies in the fact that Ricki is very conservative despite her rebellious image and rock ‘n’ roll appearance – imagine Bonnie Raitt with plaits and a leather jacket. And if you thought that casting pop singer and soap opera star Rick Springfield as the Flash guitarist would lead Demme to constant sitcom clichés, you were wrong. To express it in auditory terms: this is a record that sometimes sounds a bit thin, soft, and predictable, but it is also relaxing and doesn’t have a single flat note, partly because Streep’s performance is again so ridiculously good.

Ook in de muzikale dramedy Ricki and the Flash kijkt hij op een klassieke manier, maar met veel humor en empathie naar het leven, de muziek en de ambities van ‘gewone’ mensen. Dit keer ligt de focus op 60-plusser Ricki Rendazzo (Meryl Streep), die haar kinderen en man (Kevin Kline) in haar jonge jaren in de steek liet om het in Los Angeles als rockster te maken. Verder dan tot een rebels ogende maar behoorlijk conservatieve caissière en frontvrouw van een middelmatige coverband heeft ze het niet geschopt. Wanneer haar dochter (Streeps echte dochter Mamie Gummer) haar nodig heeft, omdat ze door haar man gedumpt is, vreest Ricki dat de reünie op een crisis zal uitdraaien. Streep covert met ziel Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Lady Gaga en P!nk. Een film die soms dun en voorspelbaar is, maar nooit vals klinkt, dankzij een belachelijk goede Streep.

Cette fois, l’attention se porte sur une femme de plus de 60 ans, Ricki Rendazzo (Meryl Streep), qui a abandonné dans ses jeunes années enfants et mari (Kevin Kline) pour mener une carrière de rockeuse à Los Angeles. C’est aujourd’hui une caissière au look rebelle mais finalement assez conservatrice et la chanteuse d’un petit groupe de reprises. Lorsque sa fille (Mamie Gummer, la vraie fille de Streep), larguée par son mari, a besoin d’elle, Ricki craint que la réunion familiale ne tourne à la crise. Streep reprend avec enthousiasme Tom Petty, Lady Gaga et P!nk. Le film est parfois un peu léger, gentil et prévisible, mais il ne sonne jamais faux grâce à une Meryl Streep encore une fois au top.
