Carlos St. John – so you needn’t keep wondering where the stage name comes from – spent years working in the wings of rap.

He wrote songs for Usher and Joey Bada$$, until he got tired of other people singing his words. This year, the rapper from Brooklyn with roots in Guyana debuted with his own work, Collection One. Against a backdrop of trap, dancehall, and R&B, he tells stories about parties suffused with drugs and alcohol, the wonderful world of Instagram, and the come-down after the party. “One pill had her looking like Naomi / And two pills had her looking like my soulmate,” he raps in “I Heard You Got Too Litt Last Night”.
