Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers, who together form Weval, met one another at the Utrecht School of the Arts, where they studied film. After their classes, they fine-tuned their musical tastes to one another.
The sophisticated grooves of Weval
This resulted in a dreamlike and exciting mix of krautrock and downtempo. After releasing their superlative debut, the German state-of-the-art label Kompakt Records is now also releasing their second, even better album, The Weight.
The duo has smuggled in vocals, live drums, and Hammond organs, making their somewhat rarefied, mysterious, but always sophisticated and often surprisingly melodious sound even more groovy.
