We might as well come straight to the point: the undersigned is a great admirer of Hell. No, we don’t worship demonic figures. Unless you consider Helmut Josef Geier a ratcatcher of people who love to dance. The now 52-year-old German DJ and techno producer first walked into our life in 1995 with his own X-Mix (!K7). He had already been at the turntables for 17 years then. But that legendary X-Mix undoubtedly changed our lives. The mix compilation contained, among others, his “My Definition of House Music”, which is now considered a classic, and it introduced us to immortal names like Surgeon, Kevin Saunderson, Ron Trent, and Nick Holder. Later on, through his label International DeeJay Gigolo, he pioneered the whole 1980s revival that resulted in the electroclash scene, and he had a huge hit with “Keep On Waiting”. His album Teufelswerk, on the other hand, demonstrated that he mastered the techno profession like no other. And yet, his musical tastes are very varied. For example, his sets might include Donna Summer, Depeche Mode, Dopplereffekt, as well as new releases. He made remixes for both Grace Jones (“I’ve Seen That Face Before”) and Pet Shop Boys (“West End Girls”), and for Laurent Garnier (“The Hoe”) and Dave Clarke (“Dirtbox”).

And he has shared the studio with people like Alan Vega, Bryan Ferry, and P Diddy. Consequently, every time you hit the dance floor, you take an enthralling trip through the entire history of electronic music. For clubbers under 25 years old, these sets are an absolute must. Perhaps we should even make a school trip of it. Last but not least, many congratulations to the Leftorium crew who are celebrating their well-deserved third birthday.
