Since the documentary The Sound of Belgium cast the spotlight on the obscure Eighties, among other things, interest has been growing in music genres like new wave, EBM (electronic body music), new beat, and cold wave. Young audiences have again turned their attention to what was going on in that period and high spirited people in their forties and fifties can feel the rebellious blood flowing through their veins again. The Brussels-based DJ duo Onda Sonora has also been exploring this synthesizer-dominated era for some time now. And the pair are now getting to live it up with Freddy Merckx in Mathématiques Modernes. The parties will catapult you back in time, and the basement of the cosy London Calling is the ideal location for it. For the first time, they will also be inviting two live acts, two self-willed Brussels-based artists. Michiel and Ciska have been working on a project called Bright Entity for the past four years. He is famous as DJ Walrus at various parties in Brussels and as part of the music project BepoTel. She is a student of jazz. Together, they use synths and drum machines to compose fine pop music that harks back to the 1980s. They will shortly be releasing their first EP on Holger Tracks, likewise based in Brussels. Jimi After has also been working on a career path for quite some time now, and it finally seems to be going somewhere. His Exile In Data EP received a very enthusiastic response from big names in the electronic music scene, and he will soon also be sharing a spot on the Treasure Hunting compilation with Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe, Jokers of the Scene, and Pilooski. His intoxicating and krautrock-injected ambient techno is just as absorbing live, as you will be able to experience viscerally on Saturday. A night for people looking for new discoveries and/or exciting ways to relive the past.
