Cumbia, Latin, Afro, and merengue blended with disco, boogie, and funk from South America and Africa: this is the unique Tropical concept that Funky Bompa has been offering for the past four years. First at Madame Moustache, the club where he still plays 1950s rock ’n’ roll, blues, R&B, funk, and disco every month. And then two years ago, he hosted his first Tropical party at Jour de Fête. Since then, the cellar of the cosy restaurant has been the permanent place to be for people who love to feel the sun shining on the dance floor. There is only enough space for about 100 people, so the parties are very intimate and they attract a truly global crowd. Funky Bompa discovered the southern sounds fifteen years ago in the Dominican Republic. He now goes back across the ocean twice a year to collect – mostly old – records at bargain prices. Besides Madame Moustache and Tropical, he also collaborates on the programming for Atelier 210, manages his own playlist on 22tracks, makes edits for his Bompa Discos label, and performs every Sunday evening with The Wild in Funky Bompa & The Wild on FM Brussel. But the best place to meet him in real life is behind his record players at the Tropical party. You don’t need to learn any special dance steps, a sense of adventure and cooperative legs suffice.
