Pop up?! Pop up?! Pop up?! All sorts of things are popping up all over the place. And the difference with virtual reality is that in real life, you can’t just block the pop-up stores, museums, restaurants, and cafés with a simple click of the mouse. For example, there has been a pop-up restaurant disfiguring Muntplein/place de la Monnaie for quite some time now, a kind of commercial privatisation of a piece of public space that was renovated relatively recently with public money and public patience. But so much for the whining. In the best cases, pop-up locations actually contribute to the public space by occupying empty buildings or sprucing up forgotten gems. For example, last year there was a temporary Cointreau Bar in the counter room of the old ASLK building on Wolvengracht/rue du Fossé aux Loups, and until 5 July, there will be a gin bar called Le Jardin Secret on a small, grey side street off Elsensesteenweg/chaussée d’Ixelles. This pop-up bar is located in the fine interior of an empty former restaurant, Les Jardins de Bagatelle. The interior has been decorated in a particularly spectacular way, as a result of which the bar and the adjacent garden are really worth a visit. The designers opted for a kitsch ethnic style because the gin-tonic cocktail originated in tropical colonial regions where malaria was combatted by dissolving quinine in water (tonic) and then masking the taste with gin. The many flowers and plants in the garden refer to the extracts gin producers use to create specific aromas nowadays. You can’t try different varieties of gins here (though that is part of the fun and the snobbery of this drink, which has been hip again since last year), but the Bombay Sapphire is served combined with tonic by Fever-Tree in different quantities (pimped glasses) and with different flavour additives (thyme, raspberry, basil, black pepper).

NL Pop-up?! Pop-up?! Pop-up?!

FR Pop-up ?! Pop-up ?! Pop-up ?!
