77 Bar

The fair came to Jette again recently, bringing more people than usual to the renovated Kardinaal Mercierplein/place Cardinal Mercier in the evening. The bars there seem to do quite well at other times of day too, though. If you are heading out there (which you can do by train, tram, bus, or Villo! bike), you will be able to choose from a considerable number of establishments. This time, we headed for 77 Bar. This alternative bar that draws a young crowd is located in what must be the narrowest house in Jette. In other words, there is not much room to move, but that only helps to make it even cosier. And when it really gets too crowded, there is always more room on the first floor, or weather permitting, the terrasse. 77 Bar is the brain– but also something of a problem child of the energetic and jovial manager Chris. Chris was fortunately able to surmount some recent VAT difficulties thanks to a round of crowd-funding – the same crowd that loves his café. During the fair, it was again very evident that this place has a loyal following. Partly because Chris is someone who can have a chat with anyone. You might witness a barroom debate on democracy at any time of the day here. You can also argue over good beer or distilled drinks because the fridge and bar of 77 Bar are filled with a variety of artisanal beers and fine single malts. Music is another possible topic of discussion. The walls are covered with posters of famous and not-so-famous groups, and the music that blares from the speakers is thus also pretty good: whether it is coming from DJs, live bands, or the record player. And finally there are also sports. The last World Cup also brought throngs of people to 77 Bar.

NL ❙ Onlangs was het weer kermis in Jette. Daardoor kreeg het nog steeds heraangelegde Kardinaal Mercierplein ’s avonds nog meer volk over zich heen dan normaal. Maar de horeca lijkt er ook op andere momenten vrij goede zaken te doen. Wie ernaartoe trekt – en dat kan met trein, tram, bus en Villo! – heeft nog altijd de keuze tussen behoorlijk wat etablissementen. Wij kozen dit keer voor 77 Bar. Deze alternatieve jongerenkeet is gevestigd in wat zowat het smalste huis van Jette moet zijn. Heel veel bewegingsruimte is er dus niet, maar dat bevordert juist de gezelligheid. En als het echt te vol zit, is er altijd nog de ruimte op de verdieping, of, bij goed weer, het terras. 77 Bar is het geestes- en ook wel een beetje het zorgenkind van de energieke en joviale uitbater Chris. Chris kon recente btw-perikelen gelukkig overwinnen dankzij een rondje crowdfunding, bij dezelfde crowd die zijn café goed genegen is. Ook tijdens de kermis bleek nog maar eens dat dit café over een loyale achterban beschikt. Chris is dan ook iemand die met iedereen een babbeltje kan slaan. Een toogdebat over democratie, het kan hier op elk moment van de dag. Over goede bieren of gedistilleerde dranken kan er ook geredetwist worden, want de ijskast en de toog van 77 Bar staan vol met diverse ambachtelijke bieren en fijne single malts. Muziek is een ander mogelijk gespreksonderwerp. De muren hangen vol met posters van bekende groepen en affiches van minder bekende, en dus is ook de muziek die door de boxen schalt naar behoren: of die nu van dj’s, van livegroepen of uit de platenkast afkomstig is. En ten slotte is er ook nog sport, want ook tijdens het afgelopen WK was het hier een hele begankenis.

FR ❙ C’était récemment la kermesse à Jette. De ce fait, il y avait encore plus de gens que d’habitude en soirée sur la place Cardinal Mercier réaménagée. Mais à d’autres moments aussi, l’Horeca semble bien tourner. Celui qui s’y rend (en train, en tram, en bus ou en Villo!) a toujours le choix entre un grand nombre d’établissements. Cette fois, on a opté pour le 77 Bar. Ce lieu alternatif pour jeunes est installé dans ce qui est sans doute la maison la plus étroite de Jette. Il n’y a donc pas beaucoup d’espace de manœuvre, mais justement, ça favorise la convivialité. Et si c’est vraiment trop rempli, il y a toujours de la place à l’étage ou, par beau temps, sur la terrasse. Le 77 Bar est le rejeton et la principale préoccupation de Chris, son patron énergique et jovial. Heureusement, Chris a récemment pu surmonter ses problèmes liés à la TVA grâce à un petit tour de crowdfunding parmi les partisans du café. Lors de la kermesse, on a à nouveau pu voir que l’endroit jouit d’une base fidèle. Il faut dire que Chris est quelqu’un qui bavarde avec tout le monde. Un débat au comptoir sur la démocratie ? Ici, c’est possible à tout moment de la journée. On peut aussi discuter à propos des bonnes bières et des boissons distillées car le frigo et le comptoir du 77 sont remplis de multiples bières artisanales et d’excellents single malts. La musique constitue aussi un autre sujet de discussion possible. Les murs sont pleins de posters de groupes célèbres et d’affiches de formations moins connues et la musique qui sort des baffles est à l’avenant, qu’elle provienne de DJ, de groupes live ou de la collection de disques. Et puis il y a aussi du sport. Pendant la dernière Coupe du monde, c’était la grande affluence.
