--EN-- True fact: the place where I first saw a poster for the recently released film Sur la piste du Marsupilami was Houba de Strooperlaan/avenue Houba de Strooper. And Houba de Strooper is “la piste du Marsupilami”, because, according to legend, that is where the father of the Marsupilami got its famous call “houba, houba”.
But in my unrelenting search for cafés that are worth visiting, Houba de Strooperlaan/avenue Houba de Strooper has always frustrated me. It is, nevertheless, a lane with some potential because it has a number of crossroads with taverns and restaurants in stately old buildings that might have been worth the trouble. La Belle Époque Restaurant perhaps refers most to the grandeur of the past, though the ravage of time has already done quite some damage there. On the crossroads with Stuyvenberghstraat/rue Stuyvenbergh, there are no less than five places. They have resounding names like Carlton, Belvédère, Aquarelle, Le Divin Caprice, and...Le Houba. But almost all of them suffer from the same problem: game cupboards, badly chosen furniture, kitschy decoration, or questionable verandas that spoil the view of both the exterior and interior.
Le Houba is the least pretentious and is therefore also rather inviting. It has a number of assets: the friendly service, the pool and table football tables, the fine drinks menu, the small meals (including breakfast), and the relatively large terrasse. Both school kids and older locals come to enjoy them. This is a family business, as is very clear from the similar physiognomy of the boss and the rest of the staff. Though there is clear evidence of some comic strip influences in the café’s logo on the door, there is unfortunately no further trace of the Marsupilami. The café is named after the road, not the animal.
