'The old man & the gun': waving goodbye to Robert Redford

Last summer, Robert Redford announced his retirement. Whether he really meant it will change nothing about The Old Man & the Gun. This film will always feel like a moving farewell.

Redford plays an outlaw who relies more on his charisma than his gun during bank robberies. The tension never runs high, and that is intentional. Lowery does everything he can to allow Redford a final time to shine: filming him in halflight, given him plenty of time to muse, and referring to former roles plentifully.

Unfortunately, the story of an ageing gentleman-bank robber is not as strong as Lowery’s usual fare. But who cares when we are waving goodbye to Robert Redford?
