From the opening lecture by Algerian author Boualem Sansal to the final note from British author Julian Barnes, the international literary Passa Porta Festival is organising a string of extraordinary evenings this week – about peace, the Arab spring, the short story, etc. On Sunday, the festival will open its famous Parcours through the city. Ten of the one hundred invitees have written pieces for AGENDA that reflect on this edition’s theme: imagination.

EN ❙ Imagination is a gift, Play-Doh for our mind, to stretch and mould any way we want to. There are therefore no limits to what is real, for anything the mind can conceive becomes. It is a miraculous, magical gift which defies time and space, filling up room anywhere we let it. It is E.T. riding a bike in the skies; it is Benjamin Button ageing in reverse; it is a wild, expansive thing showing us other possibilities. It is not curbed by rules or regulations. Unassuming, it lends itself to our control. It is only because we are. But it can be only as much we let it. If we let it.

EN ❙ Every fictional world is fed by the imagination. It goes without saying that, to create a world in writing, to put together such an assembly, the imagination must be part of the process. The imagination is also part of my life. Even before I start to write, I live with imaginary characters, I engage in dialogue with them. I cannot conceive of writing from which the imagination would be absent: it would be writing that is dead. So the theme that the Passa Porta festival has chosen is a magnificent one.

❙ ‘Brussel Zeehaven’.

EN ❙ It was a moment of revelation to me when I first read S.T. Coleridge’s definition of the difference between Imagination and Fancy. He saw the imagination as “the living Power and prime agent of all human perception” – a process in the mind which discovered new connections between things and ideas. He contrasted this force with the Fancy which made nothing new, but simply arranged objects for decorative effects. Imagination is the power which makes good metaphors to combine ideas, or things, into new thoughts and objects. In my own work ideas for novels or stories arrive when two things I had been thinking about turn out to be two aspects of the same thing, or two parts of one metaphor. I don’t like the words “creative writing” – I tend to use “imaginative” instead.

❙ What is this bundle of ideas, intentions, fears, hopes, and pains that makes you write. Many years ago, the question “What is imagination?” hit me. And slowly but surely it started to emerge. It emerged as a little, cuddly, and a bit lazy hamster. I began to realize that if you want to keep your imagination flowing, you should be good to it, as you would to your little imaginary hamster. My hamster, for example, doesn’t like running in the wheel they put in his cage. He doesn’t like the routine, the things people expect him to do. Writing book reviews would kill him. Or to put it pathetically, he would get indigestion. Actually, my hamster doesn’t spend much time in his cage. He can work frantically, but not as he – or perhaps she – should, nor where you would expect him to. If I am good to him, he returns the favour. He helps me with my writing. He observes things. He observes me. My imaginary inspirational hamster is nothing like a muse. Muses are all on low-calorie diets. That’s nothing for my hamster!
