Michael Haneke deservedly won two consecutive Golden Palms for Das weisse Band and Amour. The greyer his hair, the better his cinema?

His latest film unfortunately disproves this theory. In Happy End, Haneke makes a tentative attempt to do something less weighty and recycles a series of themes that he has explored with more confidence elsewhere. It feels almost like a “best-of”. Fans will certainly enjoy a few brilliant scenes, such a sudden implosion or a painful attempt at karaoke.
