We're going completely la la for La La Land. Damien Chazelle has liberated the genre from irony and bombast, and has introduced magic, sincere romance, and the yearning to escape the daily grind.
This lively musical tap dances with one foot in the glorious past and the other in the present. The story is light, but not feeble. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are brilliant as two people who dream of better things, and literally and figuratively lift each other up. Composer Justin Hurwitz wrote the infectious, jazzy soundtrack.
