It was terrible to behold. Hollywood has been drowning us in superhero films for years, but a film centred entirely on a superheroine was too much to ask. In the best case, a few superheroines were permitted to join the gang of male heroes.

DC – the Batman and Superman stable – has finally worked up the courage to let a woman go it alone. Wonder Woman – already a blockbuster – proves how ridiculous it was to leave saving the world only to men in spandex. A woman can do it just as well. Wonder Woman grows up amongst the Amazons on the hidden island of Themiscyra, but she is actually a demi-goddess.

Through an American spy who works for the British, she finds herself in the First World War. She suspects that the horrors of the war are the work of Ares and plans to neutralise the Greek god of war for good. The climax is actually set on the front in West Flanders, so you actually get to hear some people spewing Flemish-sounding words.

Did you see that? The Israeli actress Gal Gadot not only has the looks, but also the acrobatic skills to impress and surprise you as she hands men their ass with a smile. Apart from all this, the superheroine film does not really distinguish itself from the rest of the pack. But we’ll leave you to decide whether that is a good thing or a bad thing.
