In 2014, Molenbeek is in the limelight as a Métropole Culture – a kind of cultural capital of Belgium’s French-speaking Community. All year long, there will be a variety of convivial and artistic events. In April, the borough’s close connections with dance of all kinds will be celebrated under the heading of “MolenDance”. Inaugurated in style at the beginning of the month with a multitude of workshops and courses, MolenDance moves up a gear this weekend. On Friday 18 April, the Huis van Culturen en Sociale Samenhang/Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale hosts an evening entitled Rondtrekkende Dansers/Danseurs en transit, which will feature, among others, Vincent Glowinski alias Bonom, who lays aside his brushes and pots of paint for the occasion to present Human Brush, in which he will paint directly with his body in association with the video-maker Jean-François Roversi. On Saturday, the whole of Molenbeek gets caught up in the event, with a free sixteen-stage circuit taking participants to an introduction to tango at La Fonderie, hip hop in the Zwarte Vijvers/Etangs Noirs car park, contemporary dance at La Raffinerie, Eastern dance, and even the charleston and hula-hoops at La Chocolaterie. There will also be opportunities to visit Wim Vandekeybus’s rehearsal studio and to attend a dance show for young people (from the age of six up), presented by the Compagnie Ventre à Terre, and an All Styles Dance Battle at the Vk*. At 5.30 pm, the rallying point is the Vlaamsepoort/Porte de Flandre, for a gigantic flash mob, whose steps are explained on the event’s website. MolenDance will close the following weekend at La Raffinerie, when Charleroi Danses presents three evenings of short pieces that focus on the figure of the dancer.
