Michelle Williams was in the spotlight this spring for her Oscar-nominated performance of Marilyn Monroe. It has been clear for far longer that she is among the greatest talents of her generation.

1. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
In this beautiful romantic drama by Ang Lee, Heath Ledger preferred to kiss Jake Gyllenhaal than Michelle Williams. In reality, the two fell madly in love. Williams had a daughter by the prematurely deceased actor.

2. Wendy and Lucy (2008)
Williams is the muse of Kelly Reichardt, the director of Meek’s Cutoff. In this minimalist gem, she excels as an American Rosetta who will do anything to find her lost dog.

3. Shutter Island (2010)
In this B-movie-referencing thriller by Martin Scorsese, Williams plays a small but crucial role. She is the stunning Dolores that detective Leonardo DiCaprio cannot get out of his head.

4. Blue Valentine (2010)
Williams and Ryan Gosling (Drive) impress as a couple that have nothing left to offer one another and make a half-hearted attempt to salvage their marriage, which is doomed to failure. Their misery is alternated with scenes from more passionate times.

5. My Week with Marilyn (2011)
Not the definitive film on Marilyn Monroe, but nonetheless light-hearted and charming. Williams imitates the famous hip-wiggle and the sultry voice without becoming caricatural, and she reveals a glimpse of her fragility.
