(The Feeling of Love)

Monsieur le president, do we still need rock? Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Guillot, alias JB Wizz, probably did not ask himself this question when he founded the indie label Born Bad Records and a shop with the same name in Paris seven years ago. Obviously, the label mostly releases French rock groups who keep stale rock ‘n’ roll fresh, and also focuses on reissues of forgotten French artists. Ideal fare for the Vk*, which often offers a stage to smaller or lesser-known names in music. On 21 March, the concert organiser is hosting an evening focused on the label. Just like Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees, Magnetix is keeping sixties punk alive with its gritty guitar riffs, fuzzy bass lines, and crashing cymbals. The Feeling of Love is a bit more minimalist; they blend their garage rock with the intoxicating rhythms and meagre singing of no wave, and the nihilism of post punk. The droning organ notes and attenuated, twanging guitars of Wall of Death enlist them in the neo-psychedelic movement that is currently burgeoning with groups like Foxygen and Tame Impala, and is likely inspired by the first incarnation of Pink Floyd, with Syd Barrett, and the krautrock of Neu! Finally, DJ Kinkle of the Brussels-based garage band Mountain Bike will close the evening. Don’t forget to pump your tyres!
