After three excellent indie-rock albums, the Canadian band Wolf Parade threw in the towel three years ago. Singer-guitarist Dan Boeckner launched Handsome Furs, a group which has since also been disbanded, while his colleague Spencer Krug masks himself behind Moonface, an alias for his experimental bedroom recordings.

Julia with Blue Jeans On pop (Jagjaguwar)

The band, in which Krug plays the keyboards and exhibits his tremulous, sometimes Bowie-esque vibrato, meanders between symphonic dream pop and seething krautrock. On his fourth album – the muses favour him – he has trimmed off all the frills. Krug was classically trained, and has rediscovered his love for piano. We hear songs picked to the bone in the spirit of Satie, and Krug shows his most intimate and reserved side in his imperfect love for a certain Julia. This naked version of him is less overwhelming than his earlier outpourings, but is all the more touching for it.
