“These days, whatever doesn’t fit a neatly delineated style is catalogued as jazz,” bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse recently declared. Not an enormous problem, as far as we’re concerned, but there is no evolution without reference to tradition. And that is precisely what this quintet does.

A Little Busy
jazz (Igloo Records)

Trumpeter Michel Paré, saxophonist Thomas Champagne, pianist Eve Beuvens, bassist Nicholas Yates, and drummer Toon Van Dionant jump back in time to the golden age of hard-bop when labels like Blue Note released a whole string of classics. The Sidewinders look back not as uninspired copycats but as young, 21st-century musicians showing respect. Their set list contains compositions by renowned trailblazers like Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley, and Lee Morgan. We hear a close-knit band in which each member gets their own space thanks to perfectly timed solos. The biggest surprise is Eve Beuvens, who has clearly discovered a new love in soul-bop. The ideal group to listen to at a club.
