Kon-Tiki

Being unable to resist the lure of adventure sounds romantic and tough, but is it? Kon-Tiki evades the issue, and that’s a shame because this tough, romantic adventure film from Norway could do with slightly more depth and slightly less glorification of sun-tanned, blond-haired, muscular young men. As it is, the drama relies on fake sharks that don’t even look real and music that’s supposedly suggestive of rope snapping. And yet, the expedition that the Norwegian scientist and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl actually undertook in 1947 raises numerous questions. For example, what possesses someone to abandon their wife and child for a reckless adventure that might result in great fame – in the best case – but will more likely end in disaster? Heyerdahl was convinced that Polynesia was settled not by Asians but by people from the American continent. To prove that it is possible to sail across the Pacific without a boat or any modern equipment, he and four other Norwegians and one Swede build a raft out of balsa trunks and hemp rope. Floating more than sailing, they crossed the 4,300 nautical miles that separate Peru from Polynesia. They proved it is possible, not that it actually happened. The film says nothing about the scientific side of the voyage, focusing solely on the adventure. Fortunately, it does it well. Riveting, the old-fashioned way.

FR ❙ Ne pas pouvoir résister à l’appel de l’aventure. Voilà le comble du romantisme, mais est-ce bien le cas ? Kon-Tiki nous pose la question. On peut regretter que ce film d’aventures norvégien n’aille pas davantage en profondeur. Et, cela, même si on se prend au jeu de cette bande de grands blonds musclés, et des gros plans de nœuds marins soulignés par une musique qui suggère le suspens : le nœud va-t-il rompre ou pas ? L’expédition que le scientifique et aventurier norvégien Thor Heyerdahl a entreprise en 1947 pose question. Qu’est-ce qui pousse quelqu’un à laisser femme et enfants pour se lancer dans une aventure qui présente d’énormes risques et qui rapportera un peu de gloire, dans le meilleur des cas ? Heyerdahl était convaincu que les habitants de la Polynésie n’étaient pas originaires du continent asiatique, mais bien d’Amérique. Pour prouver qu’il était possible de traverser l’océan Pacifique sans un bateau moderne et tout l’équipement récent, il a construit un radeau avec des troncs de balsa et de la corde de chanvre, en compagnie de quatre Norvégiens et d’un Suédois. Ensemble, ils ont pris la mer et couvert sans escale les 4300 milles marins qui séparent le Pérou de l’archipel indonésien. Ce qui prouve que c’est possible, et pas que cela s’est réellement passé. Le film ne revient pas sur l’aspect scientifique du projet. On ne parle que d’aventure. Mais brillamment. Un beau divertissement à l’ancienne.

NL ❙ Niet kunnen weerstaan aan de lokroep van het avontuur, het klinkt romantisch en stoer, maar is het dat ook? Kon-Tiki gaat aan de vraag voorbij en dat is jammer, want deze romantische, stoere avonturenfilm uit Noorwegen zou hebben welgevaren bij iets meer diepgang en iets minder verheerlijking van zongebruinde, blondgelokte, gespierde jongemannen. Nu moet het drama van nephaaien komen die er niet al te best uit zien en muziek die suggereert dat touw kan knappen. De expeditie die de Noorse wetenschapper en avonturier Thor Heyerdahl in 1947 werkelijk ondernam, roept nochtans heel wat vragen op. Zoals: wat bezielt iemand om vrouw en kind te verraden voor een roekeloos avontuur dat in het beste geval roem oplevert en in alle andere gevallen slecht afloopt? Heyerdahl was ervan overtuigd dat de voorouders van de inwoners van Polynesië niet uit Azië kwamen, maar uit het Amerikaanse continent. Om te bewijzen dat het alvast mogelijk is om zonder boot en moderne apparatuur de Grote Oceaan over te steken, bouwde hij samen met vier andere Noren en een Zweed met boomstammen van balsahout en henneptouw een vlot. Meer dobberend dan varend overbrugden ze de 4.300 zeemijlen die Peru scheiden van de Polynesische eilanden. Dat bewijst dat het kan, niet dat het gebeurd is. Op het wetenschappelijke aspect komt de film evenwel niet terug. Er wordt enkel op het avontuur gefocust. Gelukkig met succes. Ouderwets meeslepend.
