Tien filmtoppers voor de zomer

Deze zomer wordt voor velen onder ons een staycation. Maar niet getreurd, want dankzij de heropende bioscopen kan je de wereld rondreizen, van het Italië van Pinocchio tot het keizerlijke China van Mulan.

1. Samen naar de sterren kijken

Daar is de zomer van de openluchtcinema! Tegen een leuke film zegt niemand nee en het vakantiegevoel komt snel als je midden in de stad in goed gezelschap onder de sterren naar de sterren tuurt. Brussel pakt uit met niet minder dan vier openluchtfilmevents. Vaste waarden zijn L'heure d'été met dit jaar een focus op filmstad Berlijn, en Bruxelles fait son cinéma, het wijkproject dat publieksvriendelijke titels vertoond, maar al quasi uitverkocht is. Ook weer van de partij is Kinopen Air, de pop-up bioscoop op de See U-site die tijdens de zomer in openlucht projecteert bij de geweldige houten velodroom. Maar top of the bill is Movie Drive, een gloednieuwe drive-in festival op de site van Thurn & Taxis. Een close-up van deze vier festivals vind je in onze openluchtfilmspecial.

2. Crash course in classics

Even more than during other summers, the art house cinemas are focusing on classics that you should have seen on the big screen at least once in your life. This year Cinema Palace is showing The Mirror (from 1/7) by Andrei Tarkovsky and the Golden Palm-winning The Piano (from 29/7) by Jane Campion. The biggest fanfare was for the release of Crash (photo). In 1996, this compelling adaptation of a 1973 cult book by J.G. Ballard about people who become sexually aroused by car crashes was very controversial. Today, Crash is considered one of the highpoints of David Cronenberg’s career. The Canadian who elevated body horror to a cinematic artform will be interviewed live from Toronto by director Fabrice Du Welz (18/7). From 1 July, Cinema Palace is also screening the two cult films that preceded Crash: Dead Ringers and Videodrome.

3. Kinderspel

Hoog boven de wolken in een Latijns-Amerikaans land bewaken kindsoldaten een ontvoerde dokteres. Om de verveling te bestrijden spelen ze blind voetbal of knallen ze per ongeluk hun koe af. Niet het verhaal maakt van Monos een van de films van het jaar. Met cinematografische middelen (inclusief de bezwerende soundscape van Mica Levi) creëert de Colombiaans-Ecuadoriaanse Alejandro Landes een verbijsterende, zintuiglijke trip.

4. Romance and darkness

In the intimate Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love, Nick Broomfield details the decades-long romance between Leonard Cohen and his Norwegian muse Marianne Ihlen. Cohen met her on Hydra, a paradisiacal Greek island that in the sixties was a hotspot for Bohemians who went to enjoy free love and copious quantities of acid. The documentary also covers the dark side of the couple who live on in beautiful songs like “So Long, Marianne” and “Bird on a Wire”

5. Allez Chantal Akerman

Dans le respect des règles de sécurité, rendez-vous cet été à la Cinematek pour (re)voir des classiques comme Mary Poppins et des chefs-d'œuvre comme Mort à Venise de Luchino Visconti. Les films de Chantal Akerman, la cinéaste la plus influente que le pays ait jamais connue, sont le fer de lance de la programmation estivale. La sélection comprend le Portrait d'une jeune fille de la fin des années 60 à Bruxelles et la symphonie urbaine News from Home.

6. Anti-Disney

In Italië liep het storm voor deze fantasierijke bewerking van het overbekende kinderboek over een schelmerige houten pop die tot leven komt. Regisseur Matteo Garrone (Gomorra, Dogman) trekt in zijn Pinocchio voluit de Italiaanse kaart en deinst niet terug voor de wrede of maatschappijkritische aspecten die wegvielen in de Disney-klassieker. Zijn Geppetto lijkt als twee druppels water op Roberto Benigni, zijn Pinokkio op een levende houten pop. Dat laatste is best eng.

7. Éros et Thanatos

Dans un village de la côte normande, un garçon de 16 ans obsédé par la mort tombe passionnément amoureux d’un garçon de 18 ans qui a perdu son père. Été 85 est le premier film de la sélection du Festival de Cannes, annulé, à sortir en salles. François Ozon nous offre là un vrai film estival qui fait revivre les années quatre-vingt. On pourrait considérer Été 85 comme l’équivalent français de Call Me by Your Name si ce n’est que le film compile des thèmes sur lesquels Ozon travaille depuis vingt ans.

8. Girl power!

The enormous commercial success of the live action (of photorealistic) remakes of Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King does nothing to discourage Disney from continuing to recycle its beloved animated films. If you only half remember the 1998 version of Mulan, the titular heroine is a young lady who secretly takes the place of her invalid father in the Chinese army whose mission is to stop an invasion of barbarians from the North. Covid-19 prevented the release of the family-friendly blockbuster for several months.

9. Een ander Berlijn

De in Duitsland belande Afghaan Burhan Qurbani vond het tijd voor een update van Berlin Alexanderplatz, een boek van Alfred Döblin dat Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1980 verwerkte in een veertiendelige tv-serie. Qurbani maakt er het verhaal van een Afrikaanse vluchteling van die in Berlijn strandt en opklimt in het drugsmilieu. Cinema Galeries hangt zijn zomerprogramma L’Heure d’été traditioneel op aan een wereldstad, en dit jaar is dat Berlijn.

10. Plein la vue

Tenet est le film spectaculaire qui devrait vous convaincre de revenir vous glisser dans un fauteuil de cinéma. Les rôles principaux sont attribués à Robert Pattinson et John David Washington, le titre est un palindrome et la mystérieuse bande-annonce suggère un thriller d’espionnage avec des éléments de SF. On ne sait pas grand-chose de plus sur ce film à 250 millions de dollars, mais cela ne gâche pas le plaisir de l’attente. Après tout, avec Dunkerque, la trilogie Dark Knight, Interstellar et Inception, Christopher Nolan a prouvé qu’il excellait dans un cinéma ambitieux, époustouflant et immersif. Pour vous entraîner à déchiffrer son œuvre, vous pouvez voir Inception qui ressort en salles le 29/7.
