In paintings inspired by the music of Arnold Schoenberg, Wassily Kandinsky showed us that painting and music can, in combination, add up to more than the sum of their parts. The Belgian artist Juan d’Oultremont also draws inspiration from classical music. Taking the work of the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, and in particular his Pictures at an Exhibition, as his starting point, he selected 250 vinyl discs. By exhibiting them, he shows how graphic preferences changed over the course of the 20th century; in passing, via the album sleeves, he presents the work of 63 artists, both Belgian and foreign. In doing so, he employs a number of disciplines: painting, graphic design, and music.
