In the shadow of the city’s great, well-known temples to art, Brussels also has a number of hidden gems with interesting and at the least surprising collections. Here is number three of our Magnificent Seven: Art)&(Marges Museum.

“Outsider art” is what you’ll find in the collection of the likeable Art)&(Marges Museum in the Marollen/Marolles. It contains work by, on the one hand, people with handicaps or psychiatric problems, and on the other, self-taught artists who are not part of the usual art scene. Art)&(Marges found itself marginalised for a while, but after a few particularly successful exhibitions, this year saw it make off with the Public Prize for Brussels in the annual Museum Prizes. The collection ranges from drawings to paintings, installations, and sculptures. This summer, a substantial proportion of the small museum is reserved for works that are usually confined to its basement because of temporary exhibitions. One work that really catches the eye is Georges Counasse’s fairground corner: Counasse has used recycled material to cobble together merry-go-rounds and carousels, some of which you can make turn (that is, if the switch is working properly). There are also a number of works of art to be seen in the display windows of some nearby shops and galleries over the summer months. A perfect excuse for spending a bit more time hanging around this delightful part of town!
