It has been three years since her last solo show in her home town. For this special occasion – in an exhibition that marks the opening of a new Brussels space, a stone’s throw from the Justitiepaleis/Palais de Justice, by her gallery, Micheline Szwajcer – the internationally renowned Brussels artist Ann Veronica Janssens has taken a subdued approach. Simple forms in plaster are mounted on the walls, resembling spare, geometric bas-reliefs. Black stains modify the space in the form of a beam of opaque glass and a pile of mineral-like glinting glitter. Light is transformed into shadow as it passes through a lens incorporated into a sheet of glass. A line of pink on the ground, a hint of gold – the kind of subtlety and poetic power for which one loves Ann Veronica Janssens.
